Statuary

The history of statuary artwork dates back to prehistoric times. Many statuary figures designed during the Stone Age were constructed out of ivory, soft stone, and clay. This enormous statuary figure, which was built back in 2500 BC, is 60 feet tall and 240 feet long!

Ancient Rome has also been known for its amazing statuary figures. Roman statuary artwork has been divided into several different categories. One of these categories points to shallow 3-D carvings, which rested upon a flat surface, such as a column, arc, or temple. Freestanding sculptures, such as statues, were constructed out of bronze and marble. Unfortunately, many of these were destroyed during the fighting of the day and only have small remnants left behind as a reminder to their beauty. Portrait sculptures are another type of statuary artwork seen in ancient Rome. Many of these were designed only for the emperors who ruled or any type of famous hero that was highly regarded. These figures only showed the head, shoulders, and upper chest area as a symbol of strength and wisdom.
